"?? ?????? ???" is the exact message I get sometimes when I close an application. A message box pops up, and it has "Yes, No, Cancel" buttons, the title is the same as the message "?? ?????? ???". This does not happen to all programs, it only happens with the following software: MS Paint Word Pad MS Word MS Excel MSVC++ MS VisualBasic NTI CD Maker 2000 Plus ...there are some I can''t remember at the moment. This happens ONLY if I don''t save my work. Sometime if I don''t save my work, it will ask nicley "Do you want to save changes?" I am running Windows XP Pro.

I was thinking a virus also. Go to symantec''s website and you can do a virii scan online. It won''t clean it tho.

Do you have a Russian version of Windows installed by any chance?

I saw those things in the titles in a program that was using the cyrillic fonts.

I''ve had that same message come up in Win98, but it was so long ago I forgot what I was doing when it came up.

Virus Scan: No virus found
Windows version: English

What the heck could this be?

That happens not just with Russian, but with any Unicode character not in ANSI. Unless the program in question has Unicode support, Windows substitutes question marks for characters outside ANSI.

Try creating another log on and see if the same thing happens on the new log on.
If at first you don't succeed, use profanity and try, try again.

It sounds like a program trying to display a unicode character which your computer doesn''t have.

As for fixing it... I have no idea , probably some sort of multilingual support gone wrong or a font gone wrong, reinstall anything to do with both of them
