I was wondering, is there a utility available that will split a large bitmap into a given size of square tiles? All references I''ve found were only to bitmap-to-iso (Splitter).

Just curious -- what do you need to do with the tiles that require them to be in separate bitmaps?

Storing tiles as seperate bitmaps must probably be the worst way of storing tile images IMO. If you store tiles in a large bitmap you will greatly increase loading speed. Although... rendering speed might be increased. eg..
(pascal)

PDirectDrawSurface : ^TDirectDrawSurface;

procedure Blit;
begin
...
Tile[a,b].Img^.Draw(dxd.Surface, x << 5, y << 5);
...
end;

I''ve not tried it though, and may not increase speed and just be more trouble than its worth. But.. creating your own program to do this would be simple as looping through each 32x32 tile on the main bitmap and save it as tile_xcoord_ycoord.bmp. And the probable reason you have not found a program to do this is that its so simple.

I would a large bitmap broken into smaller bitmaps so I can edit the ones that I can use onto a tileset, like, a pre-rendered background. If I was to use a tile engine, I would need my background to be in tiles form, hence the bitmap splitter.

The Scrolling Game Development Kit can import individual tiles from any location on a bitmap if that helps any. It saves tilesets as BMP files.
