Found this online somewhere, kinda amusing: Don''t eat quiche. ''Real programmers'' don''t even know how to spell Quiche. They like Twinkies, Coke and palate-scorching Szechwan food. Don''t write applications programs. They program right down to the bare metal. Applications programs are for dullards who can''t do systems programming. Don''t write specs. Users should be grateful for whatever they get. They are lucky to get any program at all. Don''t comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand and even harder to modify. Don''t pollute their code with documentation, variable dictionaries, structure and other such impurities. Documentation is for simpletons who can''t read listings or the object code from the dump. Don''t draw flowcharts. Flowcharts are, after all, the illiterate''s form of documentation. Cavemen drew flowcharts; look how much it did for them. Don''t read manuals. Reliance on a reference is a hallmark of the novice and the coward. Don''t use Cobol. Cobol is for wimpy applications programmers. Don''t use Fortran. Fortran is for wimpy engineers who wear white socks, pipe stress freaks, and crystallography weenies. They get excited over finite state analysis and nuclear reactor simulation. Don''t use PL/I. PL/I is for insecure momma''s boys who can''t choose between Cobol and Fortran. Don''t use BASIC. In fact, no programmers use BASIC after reaching puberty. Don''t use APL, unless the whole program can be written on one line. Don''t use LISP. Only effeminate programmers use more parentheses than actual code. Don''t use Pascal, Bliss, ADA or any of those sissy-pinko computer science languages. Strong typing is a crutch for people with weak memories. Never work from 9 to 5. If any real programmer is around at 9 a.m., it''s because they were up all night. Don''t play tennis or any other sport which requires a change of clothes. Mountain climbing is OK, and real programmers often wear climbing boots to work in case a mountain should suddenly spring up in the middle of the machine room. Disdain structured programming. Structured programming is for compulsive, prematurely toilet-trained neurotics who wear neckties and carefully line up sharpened pencils on an otherwise cluttered desk. Don''t like the team programming concept. Unless, of course, they are the Chief Programmer. Have no use for managers. Managers are a necessary evil. Managers are for dealing with personnel bozos, bean counters, senior programmers and other mental defectives. Scorn floating point arithmetic. The decimal point was invented for pansy bedwetters who are unable to "think big." Don''t drive clapped-out Mavericks. They prefer BMWs, Lincolns or pick-up trucks with floor shifts. Fast motorcycles are highly regarded. Don''t believe in schedules. Planners make up schedules. Managers "firm up" schedules. Frightened coders strive to meet schedules. Real programmers ignore schedules. Like vending machine popcorn. Coders pop it in the microwave oven. Real programmers use the heat given off by the CPU. They can tell what job is running just by listening to the rate of popping. Know every nuance of every instruction and use them all in every real program. Puppy architectures won''t allow execute instructions to address another execute instruction as the target instruction. Real programmers despise such petty restrictions. Don''t bring bag lunches to work. If the vending machine sells it, they eat it. If the vending machine doesn''t sell it, they don''t eat it. Vending machines don''t sell quiche.

Real programmers only work in assembly.

Real programmers never work on projects with other programmers.

Real programmers also don''t usually work for money.

Sorry, but in this day and age, if you don''t comment your code, your co-workers will REALly beat you to a bloody pulp! =D At least thats what I hear! =D

I''m guessing you are too ignorant to read my first sentence, in which I clearly stated that I found all of that somewhere online.

I did not write it.

You should really work on reading comprehension if you fail to notice things this simple. Seriously.

I realize that the points listed in this thread are in jest. But you have to admit, many of them are seriously outdated. Programmers come in all shapes and sizes, and have a variety of interests. Some of them are pretty ripped (ever see a pic of Andre LaMothe?). I like commenting code, and when a function is very difficult, I write the comments BEFORE the code.

Yes, some are total geeks (I heard John Carmack took his computer on his honeymoon). But you''d be surprised how varied the programming gene pool is.

Found this online somewhere, kinda amusing:

Don't eat quiche. 'Real programmers' don't even know how to spell Quiche. They like Twinkies, Coke and palate-scorching Szechwan food.

I eat quiche... I can't spell quiche, but then again, I can't spell anything.
quote:

Don't write applications programs. They program right down to the bare metal. Applications programs are for dullards who can't do systems programming.

I have done app code before.
quote:

Don't write specs. Users should be grateful for whatever they get. They are lucky to get any program at all.

Broken This one too
quote:

Don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand and even harder to modify.

This is poor programing skill, and crazy... I often break this one.
quote:

Don't pollute their code with documentation, variable dictionaries, structure and other such impurities. Documentation is for simpletons who can't read listings or the object code from the dump.

Same as above.
quote:

Don't draw flowcharts. Flowcharts are, after all, the illiterate's form of documentation. Cavemen drew flowcharts; look how much it did for them.

Visulisation is a powerful tool for designing certian systems (eg: Finite State Machines)
quote:

Don't read manuals. Reliance on a reference is a hallmark of the novice and the coward.

You have to do it some time.. Heck if people went by this we'd have more dullards in the forums being told to RTFM...
quote:

Don't use Cobol. Cobol is for wimpy applications programmers.

Never tried it. This thing is probably outdated anyway. How about putting MFC or VCL (which, incedently, I use) or somthing in there.
quote:

Don't use Fortran. Fortran is for wimpy engineers who wear white socks, pipe stress freaks, and crystallography weenies. They get excited over finite state analysis and nuclear reactor simulation.

I have never used it, but it is designed for that sort of thing, and most of the people using it are probably that sort of people.
quote:

Don't use PL/I. PL/I is for insecure momma's boys who can't choose between Cobol and Fortran.

WTF is PL/I.. you made that one up..
quote:

Don't use BASIC. In fact, no programmers use BASIC after reaching puberty.

Hmmn... What about VB? I used VBScript to do some Active Server Pages once...
Also, what about scripting. Some scripting languages are close to BASIC...
quote:

Don't use APL, unless the whole program can be written on one line.

Never tried it
quote:

Don't use LISP. Only effeminate programmers use more parentheses than actual code.

Ummn, LISP, I am sure has a purpose.. and "effeminate" is very politicly incorrect too...
quote:

Don't use Pascal, Bliss, ADA or any of those sissy-pinko computer science languages. Strong typing is a crutch for people with weak memories.

Ummn, they do have a point too.
quote:

Never work from 9 to 5. If any real programmer is around at 9 a.m., it's because they were up all night.

It works much better to actualy work during the day and get a good night's rest
quote:

Don't play tennis or any other sport which requires a change of clothes. Mountain climbing is OK, and real programmers often wear climbing boots to work in case a mountain should suddenly spring up in the middle of the machine room.

WTF... why must programers (1) change to play tennis (2) love mountian climbing
quote:

Disdain structured programming. Structured programming is for compulsive, prematurely toilet-trained neurotics who wear neckties and carefully line up sharpened pencils on an otherwise cluttered desk.

Uh... Unreal > Tetris Clone
quote:

Don't like the team programming concept. Unless, of course, they are the Chief Programmer.

Uh, again... Unreal > Tetris Clone
quote:

Have no use for managers. Managers are a necessary evil. Managers are for dealing with personnel bozos, bean counters, senior programmers and other mental defectives.

And they earn more than you.... And WTF is wrong with a "senior programmer".. they probably are 133732 than the programer you refer to...
quote:

Scorn floating point arithmetic. The decimal point was invented for pansy bedwetters who are unable to "think big."

Floating point is quite a clever concept. The author probably dosn't know how it works. ALSO, floating point can often be faster than integer maths on todays processors.
quote:

Don't drive clapped-out Mavericks. They prefer BMWs, Lincolns or pick-up trucks with floor shifts. Fast motorcycles are highly regarded.

WTF?
quote:

Don't believe in schedules. Planners make up schedules. Managers "firm up" schedules. Frightened coders strive to meet schedules. Real programmers ignore schedules.

A Schedual keeps everything from running behind. If you can't keep up with a schedule, you are probably not a real programer
quote:

Like vending machine popcorn. Coders pop it in the microwave oven. Real programmers use the heat given off by the CPU. They can tell what job is running just by listening to the rate of popping.

Ummn... Dosn't this not work in a multithreaded environment... AND I don't think CPUs are capable of getting popcorn to pop without either (1) over heating or (2) getting too hot and shuting down / slowing down / other tempreture control method. AND, seriously.. who has their processor aligned in such a way that it could even have the popcorn near it?
quote:

Know every nuance of every instruction and use them all in every real program. Puppy architectures won't allow execute instructions to address another execute instruction as the target instruction. Real programmers despise such petty restrictions.

It would be more efficient to show off by making some realy fast/small code rather than bulking it up with "look what I can do"
quote:

Don't bring bag lunches to work. If the vending machine sells it, they eat it. If the vending machine doesn't sell it, they don't eat it. Vending machines don't sell quiche.

Ummn, so if I were a real programer.. I'd probably starve...

Thank god I am a 1337 game developer, and not a "Real Programer"

Simple: mountain climbing is a process which requires planning, setup, iteration, puzzle solving, commitment, unplanned problems along the way, and ultimate satisfaction.

Andrew, I''m thinking maybe you''ve been spending a bit too long on the boards? You seem to be wasting a lot of time bashing a list of jokes...

PS sporty, i was being humorous too. Unfortunately, on the internet it''s hard to properly express the type of sarcastic humor that I love...

*ahem*

That was a very small ammount of my total time, although, because of quote formating, what would have been a short post, ended up looking quite lengthy

Anyway.. Peh...

IBM''s Programming Language One. Everything and the kitchen sink. It''s horrible, but not as bad as another rather pathetic effort called HPS that IBM misguidedly put their weight behind.

Actually, I''ve read this list before, I found it somewhere. Yeah, it''s supposed to be funny, so really, no sense bashing it much. Other than the fact that it''s uhm just a little bit outdated. (When I was taking pascal, and learning to program it on an Apple IIe, Fortran, and Cobol were outdated.)
