This might be a stupid question, but would the DX8 SDK work with Visual C++ 4.0 or Visual C++ 5.0 properly? My advisor at the collage I'm going to said he would let me barrow Visual Studio 4.0 from him. Then all I need to do is download the Visual Studio 5.0 upgrade from Microsoft. I wasn't sure if DX8 SDK would work properly with Visual Studio 4.0 or a Visual Studio 5,0 upgrade because its an older version.

I *think* it should work ok (people have managed to get it working with things like Borland etc)...

...are you aware though that you can get a *massive* discount on Visual C++ 6 or 7 if its for educational use - all you need is evidence of your student status (i.e. letter on headed paper from your advisor etc)

Our university bookshop will sell VC 6 to pretty much anyone - you don''t actually need proof of your status as a student. I picked it up for AU $99 a few years ago.

With Visual Studio.NET, MS is a bit more strict, and you''ve got to show your student ID card, and fill in a little form. It''s not that big a hassle, but it gets you VS.NET for AU $200 which is damn good...

DX 8.0 will work fine with VS 5.0, though I think you have to install the latest service pack. I was running with that setup for quite a while so I know it works.

That said I coudln't get it to work right with 8.1 for the life of me, though I didn't spend a huge ammount of time trying.

I'm surprised you can download an upgrade from 4 to 5...

It may be worth checking at your university to see if they can provide a **free** copy. Mine does PROVIDED you only use it whilst at university. If your motives are good then this may be worth checking. I got VS .NET this way. I have 1 more month before I have to uninstall it.

Sorrow is correct.

I''ve worked under this setup. Everything will go great until you try to link some specific objects (some of the sample d3dfile util classes for example).

At this point you will get a fatal error from the linker. Downloading the latest service pack solves this problem, and it is well documented on the MS forums.

However, Microsoft does not provide a patch as a standalone download at the time. This means I had to download the whole SP which was many MB and included lots of stuff I didn''t need. Good luck.

Well, if all else fails I could just buy VC or VB Standard Edition from MS. I was browsing there web site last night and found Visual C++ 6.0 Standard Edition for $44.95.

Other places I went to on the net wanted $100 or more. I think I remember seeing one site ask for something like $200 for it.

Question: Why pay $200 or $100 for Visual C++ of Vuisual Basic in Standard Edition? When a person can get it from MS for just under $50.

The only thang I''m after realy is VC and VB. Because I can get JDK 1.4 from Sun so VJ++ isn''t realy needed. I just want somthing that will work with DX SDK with no problems.

I''m sick of going rounds with different compilers and I want something thats going to work with me for MS SDK(DX, MFC, OLE).

I personally had problems getting DX8.1 to work with VC5 (DX8 did). DX8.1 needs a newer platform sdk than ships with VC5. And that platform sdk had problems with VC5. I''m on VS.net now so I never did find a solution (if there is one)
