I have a river in my game with a pretty static shoreline. What are some ideal settings for a natural body of water. I''ve tried really transparent, really opaque, in between. I''ve tried various little reflection maps (basically the scene itslef with some noise, and it all looks pretty crummy. I have screen shots if anyone is interested. I''ve read the 3ds max tutorial on water, and it specifies a brown semi-transparent material. What should the reflection map look like? Blended or mostly transparent, etc. Just looking for some simple, catchy graphics. Any best-practices?

I can''t help you with the reflection map, but here''s something I tried in a similar situation.. Instead of drawing one transparent quad at the waters surface, draw several quads at various water depths. The deeper the water, the darker it will be. This looks great around the shore line.

Cheers

Matt

This is a great suggestion. It looks great, is simple, and flexible since you can scale up or down the layers in the effect based on performance. Thanks.

Is anyone good with material settings? Reflection map fundamentals? I''m used to 3DS where you can just say "reflect" on a plane. Now I''m struggling finding the right pseudo-reflection techniques.
