I am initializing my CubeTexture with this call: m_pd3dDevice->CreateCubeTexture( 256, 0, D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, m_d3dsdBackBuffer.Format, D3DPOOL_DEFAULT, &m_pCubeMap); The program ran this line without reporting errors, but the m_pCubeMap got assigned a NULL value. Then I checked the HRESULT value returned by the function, found out that it was D3DERR_INVALIDCALL whose description is as following: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL The method call is invalid. For example, a method''s parameter may have an invalid value. I have no idea why this happened and hope that someone will be helping me out!!! Thanks in advance

Check that your graphics card supports rendering to a texture.
Check that your graphics card supports your combination of format and usage parameters.
