What does RPG mean to you. Does it have to have skill building statistics?
No. As far as I am concerned, a game like Thief had RPG characteristics. You played the role of a thief in an immersive game. I don''t believe there were any skill building statistics in that game.

No, not really. I''m currently working on a RPG project, which has no skills option type of thing. Just magic, and the basics. But I might "upgrade" it later.
If it doesn''t have some sort of stat building mechanism, then the game will have a very hard time finding its way into the RPG category, no matter how RPG like it is! (it''ll be labelled adventure or action game).
On the other hand, if it has some sort of stat building mechanism, it''ll find it very hard NOT to be shoehorned into the RPG catergory.

But who cares? Make games.

Yeah... leave worrying about the genre to the marketers or whoever has to pitch your game to prospective producers. ''Role-playing'' is such a loaded term that it''s almost meaningless.

The technical definition of ''role-playing'' is acting, by that argument even a FPS could be called an RPG. When you think Deus Ex is based on the Unreal engine it confirms the analogy.

Role playing is just that. It''s being someone else for a while.
In role playing games however I think the emphasis should be on the story and the world in which it resides.
A detailed world and a good solid story to tell will make up for some things. {eg Gothic}
It is a good day to code.

Role Playing to me is defined as taking the role of someone/something, and developing the character of that person/thing through a plot. Thats how I commonly look at RPGs.
1. Skill stuff will come, first I got to get other stuff fixed.
2. RPG''s are more like role-playing in the mind to me. If someone can write a good RPG (like me with a pen and paper), it could create a real visual realization for the reader/player. The G or Game comes in because they feel like they are in or experiencing the game their playing. Like most of the Final Fantasy series (IMHO).
Max out the extreme, go hardcore
