Hello, I am part of a group of people aspiring to make a game. We were wondering if anyone out there has an engine that they would be willing to let us use, in the pursuit of our development. If so, please contact me at: fireball@gdnmail.net Thank you, CosmiCrisis

It all depends on what type of game you are creating, you want an engine to suit your needs, not just an engine.

There are many engines freely available, but you dont want to use something like the Quake2 engine for a 2d scroller or a racing game.

I suppose I should have been more specific. We are planning to make an RTS, so the quake engine would not work. We are not against using commercial engines, but we plan to publish this game, so restrictions are bad. I would be happy if someone could point me to an engine that we could use though

Thank you,

In my opinion its always a good idea to create a game using ur own engine. it not only gives a complete satisfaction, but it''ll be easy for you to tweak and manipulate whereever u want...

I understand, but this team is trying to devote most of its efforts towards gameplay design, art, and game specified coding, rather then the hardcore rendering. We are not asking for a polished engine though, we are just asking for a base, that we can build off of.

Quake 2 is under the GPL anyways, and the textures are restricted to 8 bits colors, the kind of limits you wouldnt need, genesis3d is a bit better than Quake 2, of course it doesnt have any good gameplay code, but thats what you want to program anyways.

Yes, we were plannnig on doing game specified code ourselves. Is genesis3d a free engine, or do you have to liscense it?

If you're planning on doing an RTS, as you mentioned, Genesis3d wouldn't be the way, I don't think. Btw, Understanding how to operate someone else's game engine is just like making your own engine in that in either case, you'll spend quite some time. A 2d engine is simple enough, and I suggest coding one if you're going to code a decent game. Coding a simple 2d engine would not be even 1/8 of the work you'll need for coding the game engine itself.
