Okay, my back has really been hurting lately. The damn desks at school suck (EXPLITIVE DELETED), and it doesn''t help any that I have to sit in them for an hour and a half straight, four times a day (I can''t wait till I graduate in about a month). Anyway, does anyone know of any good back extercizes or something that could help me relieve my pain? rm -rf /bin/laden

a way to prevent backpains is to file a suit against your school until they get proper chairs, but oh well, thats not likely to happen

Lie on you flat on your back, pull your knees up to you chest and "hug" them, then gentaly rock side to side.
That is ment to help the lower back but I could never be bothered... Do I wish I had or what?

That''s hard to describe here. I''d say just go see a chiropractor. Sometimes your plain-Joe gyms have them. Or just talk to someone who knows something about that.

Okay, lay down on the ground, and have someone who knows what they are doing (don''t trust an idiot with this) press firmly on your spine, top to bottom, similar to a CPR position. This will pop your back in several areas and is a quick fix, but BE CAREFUL. I''m not all that experienced, so don''t trust everything I say.

Now, one exercise I prefer over most other stretches and warmups that are bad on you, is one where you stand up straight, shoulders behind you, proper posture. Put your arms and one leg out in front of you, almost straight, but at some angle. Now, standing on one leg, try to crouch down on your one leg until the other is only some inches off the ground, then stand back up. Repeat with your other leg.

I hope you understand, and I wish I had a picture or something I could show you for this. This stretch is one I''m sure is much safer on the back than the others that you learned in 6th grade PE. Especially the one where you bend over and touch your toes for a few seconds. Why do that when they tell you not to pick things up off the ground like that? Nonsense.

There are others, but these are pretty hard to explain. For me anyway.

There''s one exercise where you put your hands on a low box, or otherwise, and then arch your back forward, so that your stomach is nearly touching the ground, and stretch. If you''re over 18, and the pain has lasted for more than 2 weeks (ie its chronic) have your doctor put you on a course of Vioxx. It works really well. But consult a physical therapist if your insurance covers it and you have time.

Mike,
For back pain, Motrin or Advil, they are muscle relaxers you can get over the counter, that should help short term.
For long term the best thing you can do is sit correctly, which means keeping the arch in your back. Basically, you should be able to run your hand right under your waist between the chair and your back. You could try a back pillow if you could find one somewhere, but it probably wouldn''t work well in the school seats.
Also, back pain is most often due to weakened stomach muscles, so crunches will help tone the stomach and keep the back in proper alignment. Make make sure that when you do chores at home that you are not using your back incorrectly. Lift with your legs, not your back. Bend over sideways with one leg lifting off the floor, stand with one leg forward and up a bit if possible. Don''t lock your knees. Also, check your sleeping habits, don''t lay on your stomach it hyper-extends your back, best is on a side with a pillow between your knees.

Mike,
Firahs is correct if it''s been going on awhile see the Doctor. Also, if pain is radiating down one leg, see your Dr. now.

Thanks for the suggestions

Heh, my mom happens to be trained as a PT

Well, since I''m graduating in 4 weeks or so, it probably wouldn''t help me at all. So no use, really.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions... I now have more things to try than just what my mom had suggested

My physical trainer told me to lay on the ground face down, put a very small 2-5 lb. weight on your neck (dumbells work best). Not too much weight because you don''t wanna cause anymore trouble. If you don''t have any weights, place your hands on the back of your neck and apply a bit of pressure. Then you can hold the sides of the dumbell with your hands and try to do ''back sit-ups'', using your lower back to lift the weight. It''s natural to want to elevate your feet a little during this excercise too, that''s OK. But don''t pull up or down on the weight, your hands are only meant to hold the weight in place. 3 sets of 15 reps.

And he taught me that your abs are meant to support your back too, if you excercise two opposite muscles at the same time (abs and lower back) (triceps and biceps), your supersettng and getting a better workout.

You could try standing in class. Unfortunately, that can often generate weird looks, or the teacher asking you to sit.

My dad had back pain for most of his life and this exercise cleared it up in a couple of weeks:

Lie down on your stomach and stretch your arms straight out in front of you. Then use your arms to prop yourself up. Keep them straight while you pull them closer to you. Do this until you are almost vertical. Repeat.

That idea is better than you realise, so long as you''re able to convince the teacher that you''re better off standing up.

I think I realize how great an idea it is I stand in class often.

I was actually told that sitting can be bad on you. You often sit in harsh, constantly changing positions for long periods of time, and it takes its toll.

You guys all probably know this already, but it turns out that carpool tunnel doesn''t result from computer typing, clicking, etc.. The real baddy is your back. I hear theres a chair thats wobbly or something so that you don''t have your back sit in a bad posture for a long amount of time.

To relieve the back aches..

prop your legs up against the wall while lying face up on the bed.(butt to touch the wall)

then, gently sway legs to right and hold position for a few moment or until relieve is felt.

do the same for the left.

alternatively you could prolly get counterpain cream from the local pharmacy.

You think your school chairs are bad? We have single-piece plastic chairs measuring about 3"x3"x3" with no back support, tightly welded to the desk so your ribs are crushed up against it, and they''re obviously designed as some Nazi torture experiment.

I''ve found that trying to bend over backwards is kind of helpful, either that or go get a backrub.

I used to suffer from back pain and my solution has been to visit a massage therapist once a month. Not only does it feel great, I get treatment for parts of my body that I never expected (I mean my hands and wrists... keep it clean guys).

I used to go to a chiropractor but hated it. The massage works great though.

Thank god my company pays for it.

One of the best ways to alleviate back pain is to strenthen your stomach muscles by doing situps or crunchs. This will help you back in the long run, plus washboard abs make the girls go nuts!

Though if it''s really bad - see a doctor first.
