I am having trouble installing the newest version of directx. everytime i try, it either freezes half way through the installation or doesn''t work at all. in the directx diagnostic tool it says that my version is 7.1, but when i check through a game i have it says i have version 0.0 . also in the directx diagnostic tool, it says someting about and un-certified driver. None of the programs that require directx work, how can i fix this problem?

1. do you have Windows 95 ? - if so, DirectX 8.1 isn''t supported (MS have dropped Windows95 support from all future versions).

2. make sure you shut down *ALL* non-essential running programs when installing DirectX. Particularly things like virus scanners and firewalls.

3. As the Anonymous Poster said, if the installation came from anywhere other than a Microsoft website, then download the official version from MS (some people have made "smaller download" versions of DX where things they considered non-essential are stripped from the installer - some of those things removed may be necessay for your machine).

4. If you have the DirectX SDK installed, always uninstall it before installing a new version.

5. Try setting your display drivers to "Standard VGA" (in case the display driver files are clashing with what DX wants to install) - restore it afterwards.

6. Try the same with the sound card - or even totally remove the sound card during the install.

7. Make sure you have the latest service packs installed for you OS - particularly under Windows 2000.
