The Unofficial DirectX Contest Thread...

After reading through all 19 pages (or however many there were) of the NeHe Lord Of the Rings Contest thread, I have come to the conclusion that the DirectX people should have a contest as well! The problem with this is that I don''t have the money/resources to have a prize of any sort. We need to come up with some sort of idea for a contest and actually set a deadline. I started a previous thread that was similar to this (which can be found under the top 25 topics - under the stats) but it never amounted to anything. I am purposing a new contest: 1. A graphical demo - interactive or not. We need suggestions for themes here folks! 2. A tutorial contest. Whoever writes the best tutorial(s) wins. All votes will be taken inside a forum thread (like this one) to see who wins. Instead of uploading all the entries and whatnot to the gamedev server, we can just post links to the entries (for those of you who do not have webspace, I may be able to provide some). Votes will not be taken from anonymous posters. Lets here some themes for demos! Moe''s Site

Yeah, I only saw them after someone mentioned them here on the forums...

Anyway, the contest will be in 2 parts - making a 3D demo (will have to find some sort of a theme for this!) and writing a tutorial (or more than one tutorial).

How about some suggestions for a theme?

I''m just going to suggest a few themes for the 3D demo for the competition:

- nature (plants, water, whatever occurs in nature)
- movement (this one has almost endless possibilities...)

Those sound like pretty good suggestions to me. I would like to make it sort of two seperate contests - an actual programming contest and a tutorial writing contest. I have a feeling that some of the people here could produce some top notch tutorials if they had a bit of motivation.

If I wanted an API independant contest I could probably wait for the Four Elements Contest 3 (if there is going to be one).

Moe''s right. This is going to be a DirectX contest and that''s why it''s in the DirectX forums anon.

I didn''t mean to sound rude or anything by that last post of mine, its just that the Four Elements Contests allow both DirectX and OpenGL. I was hoping that some people in here might be interested in having a DirectX only contest (as NeHe had an OpenGL only contest), but it seems that there aren''t that many people interested in having one.

I''m interested in the DirectX contest. I''m only in week 8 of the D3D course at the GameInstitute.com but I''m sure I could manage something (i have some past directx experience). I also like the idea of a nature them, nature can make for some interesting stuff, as you have stated water, etc. Also, is it safe to say this is more of a Direct3D contest than a DirectX contest? This is a good idea, somebody needs to start up a good directx page like NeHe''s opengl page, why not us.

It's already happening. Look at: this yahoo group for more info.

EDIT :: Guess I'd better get back on topic - yeah, I'd be interested.

The best thing about the internet is the way people with no experience or qualifications can pretend to be completely superior to other people who have no experience or qualifications.

im keen.

as for theme: star wars ep:2 comes out soon...

or for an uninteresting topic:
"The overcast night sky"
winner is the person whose program makes the screen go the most compelling shade of grey.

Hmm, that Star Wars Episode 2 could make for an interesting theme. As long as we don''t get in trouble with copyrights and whatnot...
