Need Help! (Windows XP theme buttons)

I'm trying to get my buttons in my windows program to adopt the Windows XP theme (i have XP). I looked around MSDN...and i created a manifest...if my manifest is named (assuming my application is named "MyApp") MyApp.manifest, nothing happens...and if i do it as MyApp.exe.manifest...all my buttons and controls vanish. Could someone please tell me how to create windows XP styled buttons? I'm programming in the API and not MFC. Also, i'm running in an XP pro environment. I would really appreciate ANY help!
