I''m new to Java, trying to pick it up and expand my coding knowledge after learning C++ recently. Where can I pick up a good compiler, preferably one built in with a text editor for ease-of-use? Any help would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------- "Hey boys and girls! It''''s me! Fillerbunny! Ok, here comes my little dance! ::does a little dance:: .........I can''''t do this...please let me stop. I''''m so very tired and my skin is coming off from the fluid. When can I finally feel the cold, cold comfort of death? This book can happen without me. What? But I''''ve been so good. I''''ve done my job well. I...I''''ve deserved....could you just step on me? No! I won''''t do it! Just a little longer? Really? Go here and download the 1.4 SDK. This includes a compiler to use. Next up you need a good IDE to do things in - I recommend JCreator, which is really nippy. Alternatively, find Forte or JBuilder (both are pug-ugly, slow and pretty annoying to use).

There''s also a tutorial over here.

Textpad also works well with Java.

a lot of people use Eclipse and so do i (see www.eclipse.org for more info). it''s not as slow as the others and it has some nice features. you still need to download the SDK first though.

I use jGrasp for my Java programming. It''s pretty good. Get it here. Of course, like the others you''ll still need the Java SDK. Happy coding.

Ok, cool. Thanks, all. This was exactly what I was looking for. These boards are awesome, I''ll definitely be checking back here more often. Thanks again.

Alimonster''s post is exactly what I would have wrote, so I suggest following it to the letter.

And I also suggest shortening your sig!

Scite - my personal favourite for C/C++, Java, Perl and so on. Nice formatting, with built in command line and a damn fine app - that is also VERY small. BTW big thanks to Dave for putting me onto it.

I have developed the JGDK which can be downloaded here:

www.dmpsoftware.co.uk

... and click PC downloads

It enables you to develop full-screen Java games that are multi-platform. It includes graphics, sound, input and network capabilities.

I am in the process of adding some documentation for it on the site, so it should be there in a few days.
