I need some sort of file format for saving and loading scenes for a 3d adventure game (sort of a la monkey island but 3d). Is there a good format that any of you have used and if so, is there a decent program to create the scenes. A tutorial or the like on the subject would also be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, no replies yet... I wonder if this means that there are no such programs and file formats and that I have to write one myself. I had hoped not to...

I think the common formats are .x and .3ds but im pretty sure any format will do as long as its got all the info (truespace/milkshape format etc) or even your own format. Ive only worked with .x so I dont know about any of the others but you can get programs to convert pretty much any format to any other (and i think milkshape can export straight to .x as can Max).
Just my thoughts take them as you will. "People spend too much time thinking about the past, whatever else it is, its gone"-Mel Gibson, Man Without A Face

Yes, I know about 3ds and x. I am using them to store the models. But what I am looking for is a format to store their position and direction in a scene. An example:

OBJECT="house.x"
POS=0.0, 0.0, 0.0
DIR=0.0, 1.0, 0.0

OBJECT=CAMERA
POS=0.0, -40.0, 0.0
DIR=0.0, 0.0, 0.0

etc...

This example is an ascii-type file, but that is not necessarily what I am looking for.

Thank you for replying though Zeke.

Why not use the format you just printed? I use a similar simple level format for testing stuff in my engine, just write a simple spec and code a loader for it. Then you won''t have to learn any outside format that''ll most likely be overly complicated and/or miss some components that your project require.

True. But it is not so much the format itself I worry about, it''s the program for creating the scene. Although I guess that if I want some extra functionality like adding scripts to objects I hav to write such a program myself...
