Just download a JDK from http://www.javasoft.com - You actually use the Java Compiler (javac.exe) from the command line anyway.

That doesnt mean it will run under DOS. The JDK requires Win32.

You maybe better off installing a copy of linux on your machine. But if it really is as old as you say it is java is going to run like a pig on your machine.

Not really... because the command prompt in Win9x IS dos. Too bad I don''t have a machine with Win 3.1 anymore.

You are missing some very important pieces of the puzzle here - first of all, command.com is NOT DOS. It may be a 16 bit executable on Win9x, but its only the shell from DOS, not DOS itself.
Second - the nature of command.com doesnt change a thing - the JDK still requires a 32 bit environment to run. You dont have a 32 bit environment when running under DOS or Win3.1.
Its all very simple to understand, really.

I had a 486 toshiba running win 95 that had a 350MB hard drive and java 1.1 sdk installed... that was before the movers destroyed it that is! It also had an old version of JPad on it! Now that was a nice editor...

So... see if you can download java 1.1 from sun.

Java won''t run on Win 3.1 - you need at least W95. Maybe you can find the Win32s (good luck) install that and see if you can get javac to run, but I doubt it. Maybe W95 will run on it (486 DX2 16 Mb Ram?) or install Linux on the box and run java that way - in either case like FuMo said java will be slooowwww. What are the specs of your box?

IMO, grab a 16 bit C/C++ compiler from the list above.

You just can have a Java compiler for Dos... Sorry...

Every file you compile must have the .java extension, and 4 letter extensions are impossible in Dos...
