I have read some tutorials about height maps but I don''t understand something: How do I make my own .RAW height map?! When I use Photoshop 6 to open the file I get a weird picture. What should I use to edit it?

Photoshop usually tries to GUESS the image information for a RAW file (width, height, # of channels, ...) as it doesn''t contain a header so you got to help photoshop guess those stuff by giving it the appropriate width, height and the number of channels (and this will most probably be 1 for your heightmap, it''s a grayscale image, isn''t it!

hope that helps

why use a .raw-file ?

you can load your terrain from a bitmap... that''s much better for editing & much more flexible.

if you don''t want the (gigantic!! ) overhead of a .bmp-header for downloaders (will cost an extra millisecond to download), you can still keep a .bmp copy & convert it to .raw whenever you want to edit your terrain-map.

one more hint : you can create really beautiful terrains & skyboxes (& render very good terrain-scenes) with Terragen (no registration needed for private use !). when done editing & stuff, you can export your heightmap to several .raw-formats (8-bit / 16-bit / intel/motorola...)

that''s all you need, dude
