Why can''t I find any isometric programming tutorials for opengl, I really want to be able to use it, and yes, I know very little about directx, and opengl programming. -Raiden

Because there is little difference between OGL isometric programming and actual 3D programming.

As a starting point, search for the glOrtho and gluOrtho2D functions in the Red and Blue Books.

The chapter 13 of the Red Book may be useful too.

Then why don't you learn some more, and eventually be able to clearly imagine how to accomplish this feat, yourself?

Another pointless reply from some idiot stating the F***ing obvious, if Raiden101 wanted to know if he should learn some more he would have asked that. How about everybody on the board stop asking questions and try and learn more!! Would that work....Why not?? Because it''s more efficent to ask somebody who is experienced when you hit a brick wall that spend the Weekend walking down a Dead End.

But you Masterg like alot of other Prats on the board give a shit obnoctious answer...... how about just not replying in future.

i think masterg just didn''t understand the question.
this really isn''t something to state the obvious about..there are enough people who really do ask when they hit a brick wall. point is this isn''t a brick wall, this really is the dead end.
the guy stated that he has tried searching, but he doesn''t know how to look for what he needs. it shows that at least he tried.

although there are too many people asking instead of trying, there''ll never be too many stating of that obvious, with confining to those kinds of questions of course.
masterg''s reply is justified, just out of place, so a simple reply with this exact sentence is enough IMO.

1 important thing: except for people who try to create a game with no knowledge of programming and no graphics, anyone even attempting to make a game has to be something more than an idiot.
while it''s much easier to ask how to jump over the brick wall, it angers the residents of the forum when you haven''t given a decent effort to punching a hole through it yourself, and in that tone maybe some of the people on the board really should take some time to learn more.
and truth be told it''s actually more efficient to give it a crack yourself. y? because first off you might just succeed, then you can give yourself a pat on the back.
second, because you probably will learn more about what you''re trying to do even if you fail, and you will most definitely learn something new about your problem, the source of it or whatever.
if you take a cannon and shoot it at a wall you will no doubt be able to walk through the wall soonafter.
many people would agree that the human brain is the strongest cannon yet :D

Please ignore the above post, it is partially hostile due to the unneeded hostility that arised. Also, for some reason I wrote that you should rotate by 90deg. when it should be 45deg. I'm tired.

Raiden101 stated that he/she knows "very little about directx, and openGL programming.", but still wants to make a "isometric program." I didnt really fully explain myself with my response, sorry ( I was fairly busy at the time), but I will do so now.

Raiden101: I suggest you learn one of those api's. I personally would suggest that you learn the OpenGL API, by taking a peak at nehe.gamedev.net If you have a decent grasp of programming using hopefully c or c++, you should be fine understanding the tutorials. Once you get to lesson21, I recall a grid-based game being made. Basically, an isometric view rotates everything by 45deg to create the allusion of a 3dworld in a 2dworld. So you could just rotate your entire scene (in this case, a grid) by 45deg. It will all make sense to you, eventually.

You were of no help with that response. "how about just not replying in future." Again, "I was fairly busy at the time" of my reply and am sorry for not going into exact details. "Then why don't you learn some more" - I don't think writing that deserves as hostile a reply as yours was. However, I do stand by this idea and suggest that Raiden101 tries to learn as much as possible, to eventually accomplish his feat.

Take a look at the GLUT tutor download at Nate Robin's page. The projection tutor uses glOrtho, glFrustrum and glPerspective. Remember to right click.

Isn''t programming to meet a certain need through machine code? If this guy wants to know how to make an isometric game, he has to know what to learn and how to get there. You don''t necessarily start learning with no direction to go. Just thought I''d say that.
I started out wanting to make 2D games, but I''tm still not there.
