About how advanced with normal programming should I be before I start learning DirectX? I''ve been through one year of an AP comp science course and have gotten up through classes. I don''t know anything about Pointers. Is that something major I should learn?

You took a year of AP Computer Science and they never taught you about pointers? That''s weird.
Anyhow, learning about pointers is very major if you plan on using C\C++. I think it''s major anyhow.

Yes... definitely learn your pointers. There''s an article here on GameDev on pointers, and you might try the C++ tutorial from www.cplusplus.com or somewhere else for a general language overview. Since you want to do DirectX you should also learn some windows programming, if you don''t want to get a book then find the Game Programming Genesis series on GameDev, that helped me a lot.

IMHO, you need to be fairly advanced in general programming before even thinking about looking at DirectX. I don't mean this as an insult or anything, but since they didn't even teach you pointers, I seriously doubt you're ready. Learn pointers and structs backwards and forwards and some basic Win32 (not MFC) first. They'll also come in very handy for other non DirectX stuf. Trust me, once you've learned them, you'll be glad you did.

Good luck!
