I''m not at all familiar with linux.... Here''s my situation: I need to develop a program that works under both Windows and Linux, and that has a very attractive GUI. Right now I''m considering my options... I could either program it in java, with Delphi (using Kylix), or with C++ and a good GUI library. I''ve particularly looked into wxWindows, which looks quite promising, but it needs GTK to run.. I''m wondering, what exactly IS GTK, and do most linux users have it? Also, if you are a linux user, please mention so... any usage stats I can get on this would be great.

Gnome and Gimp rely on GTK. Anyone who has either of those installed will have GTK too. So, yeah, it is widespread.

Note: cross-compiling = developping on one architecture (e.g. x86) and generating a binary for another (e.g. MIPS)

You can look into the QT library. It is a cross platform widget library. It''s pretty impressive. It comes with a very good GUI editor. They have non-commercial versions for both windows and linux. The windows version is only 2.3 though.

Check it out.
