I am designing a video game (well duh) and i needed a little help. i wanted, with a little influence from some friends, to make a game about hackers, through their eyes. this may sound kinda stupid, but oh well. i cant decide what genre to make it, should it be: RPG: just cuz i love RPG''s, and would be relatevely easier to make 3rd person shooter: because it would look better, and probably more people would like it, but it would be really hard to make (at my skill level anyway). 1st person shooter: hey, why not... multiplayer, but lacks quality...you cant really do much, and this game isnt really giong to be a "rambo" style game, its more of a puzzle solver. other: ??is there anyone with a better idea??? ideas for storyline, plot, etc are always welcome...

A few points:

>RPG: just cuz i love RPG''s, and would be relatevely easier >to make

Do you realize that RPGs are the hardest game to develop and take the most time?

>3rd person shooter: because it would look better, and >probably more people would like it, but it would be really >hard to make (at my skill level anyway).

A 3rd person shooter sounds more realistice for this type of game, and it is a lot easier than coding a full RPG.

By RPG I''m guessing that you mean a 2d iso game, and I warn you that it''ll take forever and is really hard to code properly.

"Do you realize that RPGs are the hardest game to develop and take the most time?"

How can you say that? I can make my own RPG game in a day if I want to with Visual Basic and a simple window form. RPG''s don''t need to be complicated to create, as long as they involve roleplaying.

I''m just curious, how do you define a RPG anyway, Saruman?

It won''t be a very good RPG if you code it in a day. Good RPGs have detailed story lines and twist. That is the kind that Saruman is talking about. The design that would be involve in a good quality RPG.

Why do you assume that by making your game a 3rd person shooter it would look better? 3D does *NOT* automatically make a game look better. Currently, realtime 3D comes nowhere near the amazing quality that can be obtained with detailed 2D art... in my opinion anyway.

What genre you use in your game depends on what the main focus of the game is. Is the game going to have a lot of puzzles? Is it going to be contained in a large "universe" with a lot of traveling? Is it going to be action packed with a lot of blood and guts?

You mentioned that your game is going to be a puzzle. I would definately suggest going 2D. If you want a 3D look, then use prerendered artwork. If you would give us more information about your idea, then perhaps we could give more detailed suggestions.

Good luck.

That''s most people''s definition of a RPG game, but it''s not neccesary. And about the coding in a day, I was just trying to make a statement.

And ''3rd person'' does not equal 3D It just means you can see your own character onscreen. In fact, 3rd person allows for the use of 2D far more effectively than 1st person does, which is why I believe it was suggested.

I guess you''re right, Kylotan.

Whenever I hear the term "3rd person shooter", I think of Tomb Raider *shudder*, so 3D popped into my head.

I once played a real bad shareware game along the same lines. Your hired by some group to hack into government computers and given some telephone numbers. The game didn''t really have any graphics... it just simulated a modem connection and you tried to ''hack'' in (which was more along the lines of "oh look, some line noise... it bypassed the login script altogether... how lucky am I?")

It would be nice to see a game which took some actual computer skills to play.

well, thanks anyway, i think i will try to make it a 3d-type game...
when i sad RPG''s are easy to make, i meant eiser than a 3d, 3rd person...just to clarify things...
Saruman
Saruman
Just to clarify with everyone:

An RPG is not easier to make than a 3d game. Look at the top RPGs VS. the top 3d games. Tell me how many storylines from a top 3d game can compare to that of an RPG.

Spiff: I meant a good RPG. I''m just tired of hearing all of these newbies and kids step up saying "I''ll make an RPG, it''ll be the best of all time, blah blah" when they don''t realize the work. Newbies should realize that it would be easier to make Quake 4 than a good RPG.

i''m just a newB, so when i say an RPG, i mean a piece of crap RPG vs a piece of crap 3d shooter. there isnt a chance i am going to make a top of the charts, best RPG of all time, nor 3d shooter of all time... so ...i hope this clarifies things...maybe just a little...

also, in relpy to the annonymouse poster who said:
"I think if you''re having to ask this question, your design has not been thought through enough."
i mentioned in the first message that i was just designing the game, not actually making it...

Saruman: "An RPG is not easier to make than a 3d game" - and you would have any experience in that area? Also, 3D is a technique, not a game genre, while RPG is!
Please, think of what you are saying here, before you try to correct some "newbie" gamedev person.

Jewalaye: (RPG står för roleplaying games, d.v.s. Rollspel, som t ex Baldur''s Gate eller Diablo, om du vill veta några andra facktermer får du gärna skicka det med mejl )
