Has anyone done any DirectX game programming with Java? I can''t find many resources for this topic. I have the MS SDK for J++ 6.0 which comes with the API docs and a few DirectX samples, but not enough to actually provide any use. If anyone knows where I find some source that would be cool. Thanks.

Visual J++ IS ---NOT--- Java!

I know, I know. I not a Microsoft supporter by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I am against their principles, but the fact remains, for serious 3D game development in Java, it is necessary to have access to optimised (correct spelling down under) code for specific operating systems. Sun has acknowledged this, and the latest JDK (1.4) includes support for DirectX on Windows for their Java 3D API. Also, the majority of people use Windows to play games as opposed to other operating systems, so this is my target audience.

BTW - Can anyone answer my question?

Rats. Of course I meant to say "I am not a Microsoft supporter..."
Heh heh.

I don''t like <evil>Windows</evil>. I just try to put up with it.

you can use GL4JAVA (http://www.jausoft.com/gl4java) to get OpenGL accelerated graphics in Java.
you''ll probably get most performance using Java3D which supports directx and opengl.

Sorry, I''ve been using the terms ''Java'' and ''J++'' interchangably. I am in fact using MS J++ 6.0.

Do you have that 3D DirectX Castle example? I have it at home on my Harddrive and dunno where it came from, but it shows how to do alot of stuff even tho it''s super simple. (No collision detection and you can walk off the land into "whitespace".)

Yes I''ve got the 3D Castle Demo, though it hasn''t really helped much. I''ve been trying to create a simple adventure game. I can display a background in 2D, then put an image of a person on top, but I can''t figure out how to modify the behaviour of the person image so that it moves left and right when you press the arrow keys. I can''t find any documentation for this kind of stuff. I can start the image moving right by clicking the mouse button after I setup an ''until'' event on it. But then I can''t get it to stop, and I can''t setup the same behaviour using the keyboard.

Thanks anyway.
