hi
I''ve just finished programming a game with DirectX 8.1. It uses a self made engine (quite simple) with lots of useful classes. Amongst other things, it handles:
- sprite rendering (no need to allocate VBs, or textures, just type AddSprite(sprite) and you''re done)
- messaging system : define a list of events, and bind them to any instance. This messaging system is used to send all input data; can be used for networking.
- a sound player
- based on the DirectX SDK framework
- input system: bind any key (handles key modes, like ''once'' or ''repetition'', ...) to an instance
- simple file handling
- some useful generic classes (generic lists, string tokenizer,...)
- lots of 3D functions
The engine handles sprites only because I wrote a 2D game (jezzball), but it is fake 2D : you can move the camera, and see the game from another point of view. Very cool effect. It would be quite simple to add a 3D primitives renderer (some functions to create textured cylinders, quads, ... are included)
If beginners would like to know how the SDK framework ... works, I would be glad to write a few articles about this. It would include a full description of the methods used to create the engine, as well as the full source of the game (it''s a freeware).
Experienced programmers might laugh at it (some parts of the code are VERY ugly, but who cares?), but I''m quite sure it can be a starting point for amateur developpers.
Interested ?
