I wonder, what does it take for a question to become really hot flamebait - i.e. something thats makes people rage for ages. Here at gamedev a frequent one is: What is best technology A or technology B? (Insert any OS or API or other technology as A or B) Recently there has been race topics here, religion topics and even topic about women - these can all create flamelike threads. Can we make them stronger by combining these elements into stronger questions, for instance "Why is it that all Linux users are muslims that believe in Malcolm X?" OR "I don''t want to be programmer, because programmers are fat and never get laid." (Don''t answer those!!!) The last one is authentic (in essense) from this forum. Do you have other good suggestions for questions that can make people flame wildly? And it is illegal to actually answer any of these questions. It is legal, however, to talk about why it makes people go mad about it.

Because the questions cause people to butt heads over issues that they strongly believe in, and no matter how strong an argument is made no one is going to change their mind. This means people just keep going back and forth getting more and more aggressive. That and some people are just morons with no sense of respect for others, constantly spouting their mouth off on their personal opinons.

Dont forget, certain people have formed a negative image of themselves by all the crap they post and eventually that person themself become flamebate. *Ahem*(Andrew Nguyen)*Ahem*.

For these people, no matter what they post, they just have such an attitude about it that nobody will take them seriously, or they just cant help but get ragged on for their stupidity. I would have to say a lack of sense can be great cause for flames.

Also, even the mention of religion will call for some people to critisize those even mentioning it. Sometims it isnt necisary for a debate to create flames, but even the mention of something that another person doesnt agree with. People have the right to opinions, and if yours confilcts I think you should keep it to yourself, or at the most it would be better to start a reasonable debate rather than resort to flames.

Flamebait takes many forms.

There was one guy that "everyone" hated in another forum I used to frequent. Another user asked him to display his picture and he posted it. Or rather, what some of us were supposed to think was him. It was an unflattering picture of an actual person, I'll just leave it at that.

I'm sure he was looking for people to insult him on his appearance just so he could tell them that the picture really isn't of him at all (making people feel bad because they attacked his appearance by attaching his personality to the picture)

You'd be surprised just how far people will go. I'm sure that "other user" was in on it with him. He just liked to start fights and played innocent when others accused him of it. The type that's impossible to argue into a corner, you know?

It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.

Um, I was wondering what a troll is, in the context of internet forums. All the moderators seem to always be moaning about it.

Someone who make posts for no other reason that to annoy everyone else. The term is also usually applyed to people posting stuff like porn, hate posts (I''m talking about extreme stuff, like racism and promoting violence against women) or trying to damage other peoples computers using security holes.

I dunno what''s wrong with heated arguements though really.. no matter what the topic.

I''m fond of heated discussions, and you''ll usually find me trouncing through the flames...

anyway it''s more interesting then watching TV most of the time, and i can do it while i''m working.. so i''m always up for a heated discussion.
