when i add a light to my game my frame rate goes from about 80fps to about 3fps. i think it''s either because of my video card the does not support hardware lights. or its because of the way i do the normals. i was wondering if you drew about 400 little squares to the screen and had normal for each face using the glNormal3f() function would that make it go realy slow. Or is it my video card which is a voodoo 3.

i''d say that it is running in software as you guessed. vodoo''s dont support t&l but i can''t say how slow it is (im a lucky owner of a gf2 )

is you disable lights and still pass normals to ogl and it has still 80fps you can be sure that it''s NOT the problem (thats what i guess)

no it is not your gfx board.. wrong. go for lightmaps

youve played ever 3d-games using your voodoo3? yeah then you know you can create fast lighting even in your voodoo, you only
need second pass or your OWN vertex lighting by coloring your vertices (vertex lighting is not recommended since it has too many drawbacks)

Enable and disable light at rapid speed can slow down alot. Maybe you enable and disable the light every time you render a piece of your scene.
