Forum Development

I and a few friends are making a website. We want this to be a learning experience; so we are making all of it. We don''t want to use any outside apps or services. Everything was going fine untill we ran into the Forums. We are using Frontpage and hand coding (not much of that thougn) to make this site, and Frontpage makes a realy crummy forum. What I want to know is where I can find a tut on making forums or some open source code or some freeware forum maker out there. What we don''t want to do is use somthing like ezboards for out forum services. Our server can handel anything you through at it ( my dad runs some of it) so file exensions arn''t a problem. I realy don''t want to hand code the thing, so any help here would be very nice.
