Well, Ive already started a project ive always wanted to do: An 2D RPG Maker. Ive tried making it once, and it failed pretty bad, mainly because I was new to programming. Well, ive started again, and im finding that my code is a bit.....messy. Anyways, heres a couple of things I was wondering: 1) Im thinking of stopping the project for a bit, and creating a foundation to support the application, along with making my code much more understandable and possibly, more efficient. I was wondering if there were any good articles on creating a foundation for your application (like concepts and other things behind making a foundation) 2) Answer me this: Is using VB for my editor and C++ for my engine a good choice? Im trying to get the best of both worlds, the RAD of VB for my editor, and the power of C++ for my engine. Any answers or help greatly appreciated.

What do you mean "foundation" - do you mean the architecture?

Concerning making a good game arhitecture; there is no one solution. This depends on the game and I have yet to see any good articles or books to cover this subject (if it possible to do). But in general terms you make some kind of main loop where each iteration advances time. Within the loop all objects, etc. are updated/moved proportionally to the real time used since last loop. The rest is just bells and whistles.

That is a good choice. The only draw back is that it becomes a hassle to use your engine within the editor - but if you can live with that then all should be fine.
