Ok im new to java but and I have no idea how to get started. Do I need a compiler to program in java? Are there any free compilers for java? Please help.

Sun''s Java page. That''s where you get the compiler and documentation.
Netbeans. My favorite Java IDE.

Woah! You *are* new then!

First surf on down to Sun, and download the JDK1.4.

Next you''ll want an IDE to develop in as the JDK is a tedious way to develop code. I recommend Eclipse, because its free (www.eclipse.org) and not a massive download, and has just the bare minimum of features you want for developing games.

If you don''t like Eclipse you could try Sun''s Forte 3.0 CE (which includes the JDK, so download it *instead* of the JDK). And numerous others.

Make sure you get the documentation for the JDK, unzip it and bookmark it.

Ask more questions when this is all done

I use JCreator (www.jcreator.com) wich also has a nice, free version (called LE). It's a very nice IDE with code completion and stuff like that.. The second thing you definately would do is to actually download the 1.4 docs. Then, when JCreator and all of the Docs are downloaded, you can search for info in the docs by simply marking the word, lets say 'DisplayMode' and hit CTRL+F1, then the documentation for 'DisplayMode' shows up inside the editor.. Nice if you're a newbie and want to get the info about this and that fast and without having to click around to get it..

Also look through the example files that comes with the SDK.. it can help you too..

God speed

Here it is. And by the way, you want the SDK not the JRE.

I recommend BlueJ as your IDE. I feel it''s best for newbies and great if your new to OOP as well. It''s mostly for newbies and those taking OOP or Java classes so it doesn''t have all the fancy stuff that larger and more expensive IDE''s offer.

I''ve always done all my programming on notepad. But then again, everything I''ve made sucks.

I use JBuilder at work... I like it a lot. You can even see UML diagrams of your classes.

I think there is a free version, it''s called community or something...

My favorite IDE is TextPad. Theres none of that IDE bloat that other IDEs have. Its just a text editor with syntax highlighting and a compile button. It does the rest.
