Do software companies in general value teaching experience? I'm a recent graduate and having trouble finding a normal development position, but I do have an offer for a teaching position on behalf of an institution that has a very good reputation in the game development community. The position is part of their program to work with vocational schools. So I would be teaching high school students CS. Would an employer look highly upon this or would the old saying of, "Those who can't do, teach," apply? I know my stuff, I'm just lacking in the experience department. I just don't want to spin my wheels for a year and have nothing to add to my resume. [edited by - chipwits on June 15, 2002 5:29:31 PM]

The last time I checked, just about anything you program and complete counts as experience. As long as it is good of coarse. You might want to take the job if you can''t find anything else to do. Then, program some well made applications to add to your portfolio and keep sending out resumes to various places. You might want to try doing some contract work if you are up to it. Just don''t be idle. Anyway, teaching can translate to communication skills too. That could look good on your resume. A good understanding of how to communicate your ideas and work are essential since programming usually consists of a team of people working together.
