Report: PlayStation changed first-party single-player PC strategy due to lack of revenue

Briefing

PlayStation has shifted its PC strategy for first-party titles, with single-player narrative games now expected to remain exclusive to PlayStation hardware. The change is tied to internal concerns that those PC releases were inconsistent and did not bring in enough revenue to justify the effort.

Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Business Group, reportedly explained the new direction in a staff town hall. The company’s thinking is that its in-house single-player games should reinforce the value of the PlayStation ecosystem, while live-service projects can still benefit from a wider audience on PC.

That lines up with comments from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino, who said platform decisions will continue to depend on each title’s characteristics. He also framed live-service releases on both PS5 and PC as the standard, which suggests Sony is not abandoning PC entirely, just narrowing where it sees the best return.

For developers, the practical takeaway is that Sony’s PC strategy is becoming more selective and more business-driven. Studios shipping narrative single-player games should expect stronger platform-locking pressure, while teams building multiplayer or live-service projects may still be targeting PC from day one. The broader industry context is similar at Microsoft, where exclusivity decisions are also being handled case by case.
