Valve's new Steam Machine verification system is silent on these Steam Deck-busters
Valve has begun rolling out Steam Machine compatibility ratings on Steam store pages, alongside the existing Steam Deck Verified system. The new badge is meant to tell players whether a game should run and play well on the living-room Steam Machine, which targets 1080p at 30 fps by default.
The immediate takeaway for developers is that Steam Deck and Steam Machine compatibility are not identical problems. Games already verified on Steam Deck appear to carry over cleanly, while titles that are known not to work on SteamOS remain out. The interesting cases are the games that do run on SteamOS but are too demanding for the Deck’s 1200x800, 30 fps target at default settings.
Those are the games most likely to benefit from a separate Steam Machine badge, because they may be perfectly reasonable on the new hardware while still showing as Unsupported on Deck for performance or configuration reasons. Valve is currently labeling many of those titles as “still learning about” Steam Machine compatibility, which leaves a lot of high-end PC games in a gray zone.
For teams shipping on PC, this is another reminder that verification is now tied to hardware class as much as OS support. Studios with scalable graphics settings, solid defaults, and predictable frame pacing will likely have an easier time getting favorable badges across both devices.
“still learning about”
- what
- Valve has started showing Steam Machine compatibility ratings on Steam store pages, separate from Steam Deck Verified.
- who
- Valve; Steam games and developers targeting SteamOS hardware.
- when
- The badges began appearing last night, about a month after Valve announced the expansion.
- impact
- Games that run on SteamOS but exceed Steam Deck performance limits may need separate Steam Machine verification to avoid being mislabeled for living-room play.
Better hardware fit, but the new badge is still vague for many games.
