Nintendo confirms Switch 1 consoles will be withdrawn from Europe following EU law change on batteries

Briefing

Nintendo is phasing out the current Switch family in Europe to comply with upcoming EU battery regulations. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED will continue to be manufactured through 2026, but from mid-February 2027 Nintendo will no longer sell those models to European retailers.

The replacement hardware will be a revised version with a user-replaceable battery, and Nintendo says there is no functional difference between the current and updated products. The first revised units are expected to appear from summer 2026, with the rollout continuing into early 2027. Availability may vary by country, so the transition will not happen everywhere at once.

For developers, this is mostly a platform lifecycle and supply-chain story rather than a compatibility one. The Switch install base in Europe will remain in market for years, but the hardware line is clearly entering its final phase there. That matters for long-tail sales, physical retail planning, and any business assumptions tied to the original Switch family’s remaining shelf life.

The change stems from a 2023 EU law requiring portable gaming devices to have replaceable batteries by 2027. Nintendo has also said it plans to keep selling Switch outside the regions where Nintendo of Europe operates, so the impact is geographically specific even though the policy pressure is broader.
