Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse – How KONAMI and Evil Empire Reimagined Castlevania’s Return

Briefing

KONAMI is bringing Castlevania back with Belmont’s Curse, developed by Evil Empire rather than an internal team. The pairing makes sense: Evil Empire already proved it understood the franchise through Return to Castlevania, and KONAMI says that mix of fan passion and action-game expertise was the deciding factor.

The project started as a tribute DLC pitch and grew into a full new entry after the two teams built trust working together. KONAMI set the guardrails early: this has to be a 2D action-exploration Castlevania, stay in canon, and keep the Vampire Killer at the center of play. Within that framework, Evil Empire was given room to modernize the formula instead of simply copying it.

That modernization shows up in the whip design, which now doubles down on traversal as well as combat, and in a faster pace built around traps, environmental hazards, and more aggressive exploration. The game also introduces Rose, continues the timeline after Dracula’s Curse and Curse of Darkness, and relocates the action to a dark, historical Paris filled with recognizable landmarks and local references.

For developers, the interesting part is the production model: a legacy IP being revived through a collaboration that balances strict franchise pillars with meaningful studio autonomy. KONAMI appears to have treated the license as a creative framework rather than a checklist, which is often the difference between a nostalgic callback and a game that can actually stand on its own. Belmont’s Curse arrives October 15 on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

“Our best résumé was simply our work.”
