Ubisoft expects "superior financial performance" from Black Flag remake, but won't increase guidance due to "strong competitive lineup"
Ubisoft is framing Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced as a better-margin project than a brand-new AAA launch. CFO Frédérick Duguet said remakes can reuse core assets, need less marketing thanks to existing awareness, and still add new gameplay and features without carrying the same budget as an original game. The company expects the remake to deliver “superior financial performance” and turn positive on a cumulative direct-contribution basis as soon as this quarter.
That matters because it highlights the economics behind remake strategy: lower production risk, faster payback, and a different pricing model than a full release. For teams shipping remasters or remakes, the business case increasingly hinges on how much of the original content can be reused without making the project feel like a thin coat of paint. Ubisoft’s comments suggest it sees Black Flag Resynced as a strong example of that balance.

On that project, Duguet said the goal is to preserve the original DNA while expanding scope, revamping the experience in 3D, and bringing in a new generation of players.
CEO Yves Guillemot also weighed in on Sony’s move away from physical discs for new PlayStation games, arguing that digital-only hardware can broaden access and may grow the market, even if it changes resale behavior. For developers, the bigger takeaway is that platform distribution, pricing, and content reuse are all being treated as...
