Cyan reveals abandoned prototype for new Myst game, confirms different Myst game is in development
Cyan Worlds used its annual State of the Union at Mysterium on July 26 to show a previously unseen Myst prototype and confirm that a different Myst-universe game is now in early development. The shelved project, codenamed Project Anglerfish, was built across 2024 and 2025 and had been pitched to publishers before stalling out. Cyan has since made the teaser public, which gives a rare look at a modern Myst concept that didn’t make it through the greenlight process.
For developers, the interesting part is less the teaser itself than the pattern: Cyan is openly discussing discarded work, including other unreleased or reworked ideas from the last two decades. That kind of transparency is useful because it shows how much iteration can sit behind a franchise revival, even for a studio with a strong legacy and a clear audience. It also reinforces that a prototype can be technically and creatively viable without becoming a shippable product if publisher interest, scope, or positioning don’t line up.
The new project, codenamed Mudfish, is only described as being in early development, with no platform or release window announced. In parallel, Cyan is pushing physical editions of its Myst and Riven remakes to PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC, with console copies on disc and PC versions including a digital code. The studio is also reissuing deluxe physical editions of The Book of Atrus, The Book of Ti'ana, and The Book of D'ni, extending the Myst brand across both games and transmedia back catalogue.
