"People want to play arcade racers again" – How the developer of Wreckreation went from a company-wide redundancy notice to working on a sequel

Briefing

Three Fields Entertainment has avoided the layoffs it warned about last winter, and the Wreckreation line is continuing under a new banner. Fiona Sperry has formed When Tides Turn as a separate studio, transferred the team across, and begun work on Wreckreation 2 while Three Fields remains the home of the original game and earlier releases.

The pivot came after Wreckreation launched in a rough state and the studio faced a cash crunch. Patreon support from more than a thousand backers helped keep the team together long enough to ship 18 updates, including fixes for handling and other launch issues. Sperry says the sequel is the only realistic way to secure the staff’s future, rather than continuing to patch a game that was effectively being supported for free.

For developers, the interesting part is the business model shift: a tiny self-published team, a transferred IP arrangement, UK Games Fund support, and a push for angel investment instead of chasing publisher-scale returns. Sperry is also leaning hard into open development, using Steam playtests and early player feedback from the start. The team says the first game’s technical groundwork means the sequel can move faster, but the real lesson is that player expectations, scope, and funding all have to line up if an arcade racer is going to survive in today’s market.

“We continued with Wreckreation 1 as long as we could.”
