Analyst data: Assassin's Creed Odyssey experiences surge in daily active users following Christopher Nolan film
Assassin's Creed Odyssey got a major second wind after Christopher Nolan's Odyssey film premiered on July 17. Across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, daily active users rose from 122,000 on opening day to 233,000 within ten days, roughly 1.8x pre-premiere levels. Alinea Analytics put the engagement gain at 90%, with Xbox up 134% to 84,000 DAUs and PlayStation nearly doubling to 114,000.
The interesting part for developers is that this looks like attention converting into play, not a classic full-price sales event. Rhys Elliott at Alinea pointed to subscription access on Game Pass and PlayStation Plus as a big reason console engagement spiked so hard. Steam also grew 26% without any discount, which makes the case that the film itself drove a meaningful return-player and curiosity surge.
Newzoo saw two distinct peaks: one on July 17, when all three platforms moved together, and another on July 25, when PlayStation discounted Odyssey's Deluxe and Gold editions by 28%. Manu Rosier said the first spike points to demand shifting because of the film, while the second layered in price-sensitive buyers and lapsed players reinstalling the game. On Steam, engagement was reportedly more than fivefold above June baseline by late July.
The broader takeaway is that transmedia can still move live engagement for older catalog titles, especially when the game and adaptation share a strong brand hook. Similar effects have shown up around Fallout, where TV exposure pushed both player counts and sales. For publishers, this is useful evidence that a well-timed discount, subscription placement,...
