Xbox to implement age verification in Australia on console and PC in late August

Briefing

Xbox is rolling out age verification in Australia for adult accounts later this month, covering both console and PC access to 18+ apps and games on the Microsoft and Xbox Store. The requirement is tied to local compliance, and users who skip verification may find mature storefront content restricted.

The practical impact goes beyond store access. Accounts that do not complete verification may also lose communication and social features, including voice and text chat, messaging, third-party communication tools, broadcasting, sharing, streaming, and in-game user-generated content. Games and apps already owned are expected to remain playable, which softens the blow for existing libraries.

Verification will be handled by VerifyMy, a London-based provider, and users can confirm age through email, facial age estimation, a credit card, or government-issued ID. Microsoft has already used similar age checks in the UK, where age verification became part of the platform’s compliance response to online safety rules.

For developers, this is another reminder that platform policy can directly affect onboarding, community features, and mature-content distribution. Studios shipping UGC-heavy or social games on Xbox in Australia may want to think about how restricted accounts behave, what players can still do without verification, and how much friction they can tolerate before conversion or retention starts to slip.
