Riot Games sunsets active development on 2XKO as it costs "substantially more to operate than it brings in"
Riot Games is winding down active development on 2XKO, with the final live update work set to wrap in December. The fighter will remain playable, free to download, and online beyond 2026, so this is a sunset of ongoing development rather than a shutdown of the game itself.
The decision comes after Riot reviewed the game’s performance and concluded that 2XKO costs substantially more to operate than it brings in. Engagement has stayed relatively flat even after larger updates, and while new characters, gameplay changes, and competitive events were well received, they never produced a sustained shift in the game’s trajectory.
Riot is still shipping three more patches. Patch 1.3.1 lands on September 8 and unlocks all champion characters, removes Battle Passes, KO Points, Champion Tokens, seasons, and events, and streamlines the remaining online experience. Patch 1.3.3 in October adds Samira as the final champion and closes out major content. Patch 1.3.5 arrives in December and is focused on bug fixes only.
The monetization cleanup is already underway: KO Point purchases were disabled on August 20, refunds are being processed for purchases made on or before that date, and console refunds will go through platform holders. Riot also said it will keep looking at what it can do for players, tournament organizers, competitors, and creators as it figures out its next move after 2XKO.
