"It's sad and devastating" – Black Myth: Wukong's physical publisher is mourning the loss of PlayStation discs
GamesIndustry.biz reports that PM Studios is bracing for a major reset in physical publishing as Sony winds down PlayStation disc production in January 2028. CEO Michael Yum calls the change “sad and devastating,” especially for a company that built part of its business around discs and cartridges.
PM Studios says it has backed roughly 100 physical releases a year, often for other publishers as well, and Black Myth: Wukong became a breakout success that helped cover the rest of its slate. Even so, Yum expects the market to keep shifting toward digital, particularly among younger players who are less attached to discs.
The company is already adapting by pushing more digital titles, funding and publishing AA projects, and planning premium physical products where the collectible angle matters most. Yum says future releases may increasingly become code-in-box packages, with stronger emphasis on fan service, special editions, and retail-friendly IP.
That strategy still leaves room for physical games that can prove their value at retail, especially kids’ titles, big IP, and successful indies with an established audience. PM Studios is also betting that AA games from China and elsewhere can stand out in an overcrowded digital market, even if the higher budgets make those bets riskier.
