"It's sad and devastating" – Black Myth: Wukong's physical publisher is mourning the loss of PlayStation discs

Briefing

GamesIndustry.biz says PM Studios is adjusting its business as Sony prepares to end PlayStation disc production in January 2028. CEO Michael Yum, whose company has spent years building a physical publishing pipeline, called the change “sad and devastating” and said it removes a choice many players still value.

For developers, the immediate takeaway is that physical is not disappearing overnight, but the format mix is changing fast. PM Studios expects more code-in-box releases and higher-end collector-focused packages, while still backing select full-disc releases where the platform allows it. Yum also pointed to younger audiences and family-friendly titles as a reminder that retail still matters: Bluey's Quest For The Gold Pen reportedly sold about 80% physical.

The company is also broadening beyond pure distribution into funding and full publishing, including support for AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch, My Time at Evershine, and Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us 2. Yum said PM Studios wants to take bigger risks on bigger IPs, but only when there’s enough evidence to reduce downside, such as a known franchise, a credible team, or strong wishlists.

The broader context is a market where digital dominates, yet collectors, parents, and some indie audiences still buy boxed games. PM Studios sees that as an opening for premium physical products and for AA titles that can stand out in crowded digital storefronts.
