Majutori

Redefining the creature-catching genre.

About This Project

Majutori is a hand-animated creature-catching RPG set across a vast, reactive volcanic island—where expressive 2D Tamers and Maju inhabit an interactive 3D-diorama world.

Choose one of ten distinct Origins, each with its own opening experience, nearby characters, early routes, quests, and available Maju. Explore an interconnected region of twenty cities, towns, and villages; discover creatures shaped by twenty mysterious Affinities; build relationships; trade with other Tamers; challenge powerful Battleground Moguls; and ultimately venture into the ancient Heartwild surrounding the island’s active volcano.

Majutori is designed to recapture the wonder of discovering animals and hidden life while giving players greater freedom over how they move, explore, progress, and build their teams. Responsive camera-relative movement, an orbital exploration camera, environmental interaction, realistic ground-plane collision, changing terrain, and a world that evolves through the story are intended to make the island feel like a place rather than a sequence of disconnected routes.

At its heart, Majutori is a story about childhood discovery, family memory, friendship, rivalry, competitive mastery, loss, and the bond between people and the creatures sharing their world.

Planned Features

  • 200 original Maju planned for the first generation, distributed across twenty Affinities.

  • A hybrid visual style combining hand-animated 2D characters with fully interactive 3D environments.

  • Ten selectable starting Origins, each offering a different introduction and early-game journey.

  • Twenty principal cities, towns, and villages, each with its own Battleground Mogul and Affinity identity.

  • Fluid 360-degree exploration with walking, running, terrain-modified movement, orbital camera control, environmental occlusion, and soft-grid interaction assistance.

  • A large volcanic island with branching routes, wilderness habitats, caves, coastlines, waterways, settlements, ancient locations, weather, and changing world states.

  • Catching, battling, trading, exploration, relationship building, collection, team development, rematches, and long-term return play.

  • A complete campaign designed to remain fully playable alone.

  • Planned one-to-four-player online exploration with drop-in/drop-out cooperation.

  • Planned two-player local split-screen, with each player retaining individual progression.

  • Solo-only Battleground Mogul challenges that preserve the importance of personal mastery.

  • An emotionally human cinematic story centered on a volcanic catastrophe and the mysteries connecting Maju, Affinities, and the island’s history.

Majutori is presently in active solo development in GameMaker. Its foundational rendering, movement, interface, save architecture, and Affinity visual-effects systems are being built carefully so that later gameplay can grow from a stable and reusable technical foundation.
