About This Project

The world of Sorrem was secretly built by a pantheon of gods called the Ascended Host as a harvesting ground: they cultivated mortal faith and suffering to feed their own power, engineering wars, disasters, and cycles of hope and collapse from behind a facade of benevolence. Seven dissenting gods, known as the Liberators, rebelled by constructing Crucibles — vast labyrinths woven into the foundations of the world — designed to shatter and reforge mortals into something capable of challenging divine power. When the Ascended discovered the betrayal they destroyed or erased the Liberators, but could not undo the Crucibles without unraveling the world itself, so they rebranded them as cursed tombs and let mortal memory do the rest.

Centuries later the lie is fraying. Monsters grow stronger and divine miracles grow scarce as the gods' harvest dries up. Rumors now spread that a Crucible has been cleared and an Ember of Severance — a fragment of divine essence that grants near-demigod power at the cost of something mortal — has been claimed. Somewhere, a mortal struck down a divine herald and lived. For the first time in ages, the Ascended Host are afraid.

Sorrem is a top-down RPG game for the casual gamer who wants to join their friends in quick games through dungeons called Crucibles. It is built using just JavaScript/Typescript on NodeJS, custom rendering engine in the browser, and ReactJS in the browser for the GUI overlay.

It is a pet project by Dino Gambone, who is finally getting around to creating a real game after being a member of GameDev.net since 1999, thanks to the assistance of AI.
