About This Position
Project Game Phoenix is looking for 2 to 3 volunteer programmers to help modernize and maintain an existing licensed 3D MMORPG.
The project is already running and in active development. This is not a greenfield project. Most of the work involves understanding an established codebase, fixing issues, modernizing older systems, and helping implement new features alongside our lead developer.
The codebase includes both Java and C++. You do not need to be an expert in both, but you should be comfortable reading and working in at least one of them.
We are especially interested in developers who enjoy working with legacy systems, debugging unfamiliar code, game or server systems, networking, tools, build systems, or engine-related development.
This is currently a volunteer position. Contributors work under NDA before receiving access to project source and materials.
Requirements
• Comfortable with Java and/or C++
• Comfortable using Git and working with an existing repository
• Able to read and understand unfamiliar code
• Willing to work collaboratively with an existing development team
• Good communication and ability to complete scoped tasks
• Interest in game development, legacy systems, or MMORPGs
Professional game development experience is not required. Personal projects, open-source work, modding, engine work, or other relevant experience are welcome.
Project and working terms
- Hours per week
- Flexible, typically 3 to 8 hours per week depending on availability.
- Expected duration
- Ongoing contribution. We are looking for developers interested in staying involved beyond a short-term task or game jam.
- Compensation details
- This is a part-time contributor role offering a one-time stipend plus a profit-sharing arrangement. Specific compensation terms will be discussed with selected applicants based on experience, availability, and expected contribution to the project. Contributors will have the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful development work on an active licensed MMORPG and work directly with an established development team.
- Decision process
- Applications are reviewed by the project lead and development team. Selected applicants will have a short introductory conversation to discuss their experience, interests, availability, and the project. Developers may also have a brief technical discussion with our lead developer to make sure there is a good fit for the codebase and current development needs. Applicants selected to join the team will review the contributor terms, including the stipend and profit-sharing arrangement, and complete an NDA before receiving access to project materials, source code, and repositories.
