Visual Effects built in-engine vs. Outside software

Hey everyone - had a question that I wanted to poll the room on.

I've been working in Film/TV VFX for sometime and have been self-learning some game VFX on the side. I've been primarily building effects in 3DSMax, or leveraging Adobe applications like Photoshop and AE to build some custom sprite textures and animations.

My question is, I know that you can build VFX in-engine as well, but I haven't really found much benefit to doing so. It seems like a lot of the tools are better in 3DSMax for example. Is there any huge benefit from building directly in the particle and effects systems inside Unreal/Unity? Maybe from a performance standpoint?
