A More Coherent Vision: Video Devlog 41

A More Coherent Vision: Video Devlog 41

The forty-first devlog of Deterrence. In this log, the game gets a change of mechanics making it a unique tower defense with all the freedom of an RTS.

Experience a dynamic, instant-action, mid-core tower defense with all the freedom of an RTS.

A More Coherent Vision

The game got new mechanics that made it more unique and closer to the original vision of the project. After a lot of thought about the current direction of the project, I found that the game was just going to be another RTS that couldn't compete with competition. That's when I came full circle with the original vision of the project, and this is to have a tower defense with all the freedom of an RTS.

The new blend of tower defense and RTS mechanics include: fog of war, enemy path outlines, unit management, a tower defense economy, no base building, non-linear campaign with mission rewards and research tree, destructible environments, radio-in abilities, time-of-survival and wave-count win conditions, miscellaneous mission objectives and bonus objectives.

The game now feels like a 'They Are Billions' without the colony sim and more tower defense mechanics. The campaign will be non-linear, allowing the player to choose their own conflicts and will have mission rewards that can be used to unlock a research tree. This game will appeal to those who want a defense game with a lot of depth, but don't want missions to last longer than 30 minutes.

Stylized Look

The look of the game has been stylized with post processing effects: bloom, color grading, anti-aliasing, and ambient occlusion. All of the post processing effects will be optional except the color grading in the final product.

Apache Unit

The player can now get flying apache units. These units will come in handy to support defenses quickly as they have no pathfinding blocks. The apache will be unlocked with the air superiority support role.

Play Testers Wanted

Deterrence still needs more testers to help improve the user interface and user experience. If you'd like to volunteer to be a play tester, then please join the discord for further instructions on how to get involved with the development.
