Neverwinter Nights uses a fully functional 3-D engine. There are no tiles. They basically made everything the same as they would make for a FPS or some other 3-D game, but then made the camera hover overhead to simulate the 2-D look of the earlier Baldur''s Gate games. That explains why you can zoom and rotate and such... if i remember correctly those features were not available in Baldur''s Gate 1 and 2, as they WERE tile based.

Hello there,

Neverwinter nights does use a tile based
engine however the tile''s in this instance are
3D meshes rendered every 10 units i believe ( as
each tile is 10x10 meters )

Mark.

Are houses from small meshes? Or houses are one big mesh? Cause I don''t know what is better for my RPG game - one big mesh or some smaller meshes like in isometric games.

It depends. If you want to be able to damage/build custom buildings or just want more reusablity, tile everything.

If you just have on house mesh and you want to reuse a wall type, you''ll have to build a whole other house mesh instead of just using the wall title. It gives you more freedom and may simplify collision detection/path finding since everything is the same size. There are ways to do things in that area to eliminate any additional issues that may come up from using variable size meshes.

In terms of performance you''ll probably see a hit using tiles but I don''t think it would be significant enough to warrent not using them.

Ben
