i do not want to start a war here. it''s just a question. those who wish to answer with facts then feel free. here goes. can anyone highlight things that CAN be done in Java that CANNOT be done in C++?

I think you can pretty much do just about everything in C++ that you can in Java. The sole exception would be cross platform binaries, but since you usually program to a platform specific multimedia API, I would think that cross-platform capabilities would not be the most important consideration. Cross platform may be an advantage in hybrid engines, where part is developed in C++ (low level graphics routines) and part in Java (game logic).

The reason to use Java for some part of a game development project would be its higher developer productivity. Its ease of use, easier debugging, strong networking packages. etc... make it faster to develop Java code than C++ code.

So for the most part I see it as a trade off: C++ takes more time but has higher performance potiential, and Java is quicker and easier but doesn''t offer the same potiential performance.
