Winsock is more powerful because you could use your Winsock programming experience in other areas including network applications.

Personally, I''d choose Winsock over DirectPlay. I think Winsock gives you more freedom.

That response was the worst I''ve ever read I think. Usability across projects has nothing to do with power does it? No.

DirectPlay will be much easier for you to use in a multiplayer game and more powerful.
Why?
Because with winsock, you will find yourself having to code things like nametables, session management, host migration, voice over IP, etc . . .

Yes, you may have the time and knowledge to do these things, but I''m guessing that even if you do, you don''t want to.
For a basic application that just needs to send data across a wire, winsock is a good bet. If you want to do any of the fancy (and usually necessary) stuff mentioned above, you''re better off using directplay. Especially if you plan on using other DX components like D3D DSound etc. Directplay has come a long way from earlier versions and is a very powerful tool now.

Game Programming Gems 3 has a good read on DirectPlay amazingly, and the SDK tutorials are a good start.
Don't be afraid to be yourself. Nobody else ever will be.
