How many posts are there where the first questions asked fall into the following group: - What video card do you have? - What OS is on your system? - How much RAM do you have? - What driver version have you installed? - What desktop resolution/color depth/full-vs-windowed mode are you testing with? I thought it would be a neat idea to be able to select some items from a drop-down list (perhaps stored in members'' profiles, then select a "include system specs" checkbox in the New Topic composition area). This would produce a small table at the end (or perhaps the right side) of new message content, composed of information such as: System (a group of combo-boxes with different ranges) - CPU Type (Intel, AMD, Motorola, Sun) - CPU Model (Pentium I/II/III/IV, AMD K6-2/Athlon/Duron, Cyrix MX86, PPC/G3/G4, Sparc) - Speed (mHz) - RAM - Video Card Type (3dfx, ATI, NVIDIA, PowerVR, Xabre) - Video Card Model (Voodoo/2/3/4/5/Banshee, Rage3D/Radeon 7500/8500/9000/9700, Geforce/2/3/4 Ti/MX, Kyro/II) - Sound Card Type (Creative Labs SB16/Live, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, Yamaha, Crystal) - Input device (MS Sidewinder, Logitech Wingman, etc) - Internet connection (33.6k, 56k, ISDN, xDSL, cable, T1, etc) - Other (Gameboy/Advance, Dreamcast, PS/PS2, XBox, GameCube) Software (a group of multi-select listboxes) - Video driver version/date (textbox for this) - Graphics API (OpenGL, Direct3D, Glide, GDI, VESA, VGA, etc) - Graphics API version (DirectX n, OpenGL 1.n, Glide n, Mode 13h, GLUT, SDL) - Sound driver version/date (textbox) - Sound API (DirectSound, DS3D, OpenAL, etc) - Input driver version/date (textbox) - Input API (DirectInput, OpenIL, etc) - Network API (DirectPlay, Winsock, HawkNL, etc) If the options for software are made up of multi-select listboxes, this would also accomodate those developers programming with multiple APIs. I think that''s a damn cool idea! But it''d require a rewrite of some of the forum software which would cost GDnet money.

Well, for one thing GDNet is considering moving to an out-of-the-box solution and happens to be leaning toward PostNuke. If PostNuke is chosen, extending forum abilities will become a lot more straighforward since PostNuke is written as a content management framework that utilizes specialized "modules" for different aspects. All we''d need to do is write a Nuke module, and that can even be done by forum members.

Our server supports PHP currently, but if we switch to PostNuke for everything, we''d also be moving to a new Linux/PHP/MySQL-based server.

Postnuke sucks though. Seriously. As a CMS it''s about as 1 dimensional as you can get. If anything the Envolution fork of PN has at least some hope, but other than that I would *never* ever migrate a site this large over to Postnuke.

The biggest problem with PN is that the developers, however misguided they are in where they are currently taking PN, break with backwards-compatibility on almost every release. This requires module rewrites every time you want to upgrade.

what about www.phpBB.com? The phpBB board is used very successfully with many large boards, in the general descussion area they have a thread with many large boards flaunting their stuff.
