I know a bit of programming, but I want to get better, so I figured I''d try and get into game development. I downloaded the DirectX 8.1 SDK and I have everything in C:\DXSDK. Is this all I have to do, or do I have to transfer the include files and library files in my compiler directory? I''m using Borland C++ 5.0. Is this a good compiler for game development and DirectX stuff, or should I get Visual C++? Also, when I try and compile the sample stuff from the SDK, I get many errors, like "undefined symbol" and stuff. I''m really confused. Any help would be apreciated.

You got to have MSVC6 to use the 8.1 SDK, at least if you want to save yourself a lot of trouble. Most of the samples around are written for VC6 also.

Not saying Borland isn''t a damned good compiler!

So, if I get Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, the samples should compile?

compiled 100%. If you are going to install msvc++ after instaling DXSDK, you have to manually configure the paths of the include and library files. This is located in Tools->Options->Directories[tab] menu.

Have fun

I''m getting the same kind of problem with Visual C++.net,
I''m copying code right out of an Adams book and it keeps saying that I have unresolved external symbol. I''ve configured the paths to the proper folders in C:\DXSDK, but it doesn''t help.
